Choose the appropriate measuring needle for your application
The selection of scanning probes depends on the scanning application and the type of scanning probe. The diameter of the measuring needle used should be the same as the diameter of the precision machining tool used for producing the workpiece.
Choose the shortest possible probe to prevent excessive bending, but ensure that the probe is long enough to prevent collision during scanning.
Application considerations
In point measurement, the measuring ball only comes into contact with the surface of the workpiece for a very short period of time. Scanning is different because the measuring ball slides along the surface of the workpiece. Due to continuous contact, there is a continuous sliding between the measuring ball and the workpiece surface.
Renishaw has conducted an extensive research program to examine the interaction between ball materials and workpiece surfaces. All tests on the test ball material show that the material accumulates on the surface of the test ball. It is recommended to wipe the measuring ball with a clean, lint free cloth between two measurements to remove any residue.
Friction and wear (scanning and grinding materials)
For example, if measuring cast iron workpieces, both the spherical measuring needle and the workpiece surface will be worn due to friction. Extremely small residual particles may cause small scratches on the surface of spherical measuring needles and workpieces. We recommend using zirconia probes in such applications to minimize this impact.
Adhesive wear (scanning aluminum workpieces)
When scanning the aluminum surface with a ruby measuring ball, these two materials adhere to each other. Materials typically transfer from softer surfaces to harder surfaces. This means that aluminum will accumulate on the surface of the measuring ball, whileAfter measuring only 100m at a time, the aluminum coating is clearly visible on the measuring ball. We recommend using silicon nitride spherical probes for this type of application. This material is repulsive to aluminum, so the influence of residues rarely occurs.
