A system only needs to be equipped with one IP network address box, which needs to be placed in a location that can be accessed by all network devices such as hosts and extensions within the system
When all network devices such as hosts and extensions are in the same network segment of the local area network (LAN), the IP address of the address box is set to any valid IP address in that network segment
When all network devices such as hosts and extensions cross network segments within a local area network (LAN), the IP of the address box must be set to the IP of the topmost network segment (accessible to all network devices such as hosts and extensions)
